Assistant Scientist Molecular Bacteriology

Assistant Scientist position

As an assistant scientist molecular bacteriology your main fields of interest are bioinformatics/genomics and molecular bacteriology in the department of Bacterial Vaccines. You will work in a multidisciplinary research team that identifies designs, produces and characterizes new vaccine candidates. Bioinformatics, functional genomics, molecular engineering, and biochemistry are key R&D activities. Your core expertise is bacterial genetics and biochemistry, which will be used to dissect and understand host-pathogen interactions.

Job Position Requirements

  • Bioinformatics experience:
    • Basic experience with bioinformatics software (e.g. blast, building alignments and phylogenetic trees, making genome assemblies)
    • Basic knowledge of next-generation whole genome (microbial) sequencing
    • Experience/affinity with one or more programming languages (e.g. Python, Perl, C/C++, Java)
    • Ability to handle complex, large datasets
    • Experience with working in a Linux OS environment
    • A basic understanding of statistics and use of statistics software (e.g. R, SPSS, SAS, Excel)
  • Practical experience:
    • Basic microbiology practice: bacterial cultivation and strains identification
    • Basic molecular biology techniques: DNA-, RNA-, Protein isolation and the associated analytical methods
    • Microscopy techniques
    • Perform genetic manipulation of bacteria
    • Perform small-scale recumbent protein expression and purification

Plan and perform experiments and tests:

  • Consulting with (senior) scientists
  • Arrange necessaries for tests / experiments
  • Set up assays (performing literature studies and consulting catalogues)
  • Document experimental work and results in lab notebook
  • Report and evaluate results with supervisor
  • Work according to established and written procedures
  • Fluent control of English language
  • Excellent presentation skills

Areas of full responsibility

  • Practical realization of the research (experiments and tests) under the supervision of (senior) scientist(s)
  • Documentation of experiments and results in lab notebooks and full reports
  • Evaluation of results together with the supervisor (scientist / senior scientist)
  • Responsible for writing SOP's/ protocols.
