Top Tips to perfect your CV during the pandemic
In light of the current situation, there has naturally been an increase in the amount of people job seeking. According to Australia’s largest job board, SEEK, there has been a large decrease of over 33% in the past month of the number of job ads posted on a year-on-year basis. With this in mind, it is little wonder that there has been a real focus on CV health when it comes to job hunting. There are a greater number of applications per job ad than normal, meaning that competition is rife. Therefore, there is no need for errors no matter how small, particularly in the case of grammatical or spelling errors. Hiring managers now have the time to meticulously go through the CV’s that are sent to them for the live roles. Following some of the tips below will ensure that you are boosting your chances of getting your CV noticed and standing out from the crowd.
- Focus, Tailor and Format
Focus on the role or type of roles you are applying on and try and tailor your CV to this. This may result in you having a few different versions of CV’s at the same time, but it will stand to your benefit in the long run in terms of impressing hiring managers and showcasing your experience for the specific role. When it comes to formatting, do not underestimate the effect this haves on the overall appearance of your CV. Use the same font throughout and ensure that this is clear and legible. Then, run your CV through a spellchecker and also through Grammarly to rule out incurring any grammatical errors. This minimises your chances of slipping up and gives a great first impression to anyone reading your CV.
- Keep it Concise and Relevant
Your CV is essentially a summary of your experience, nothing more and nothing less. Therefore, it should not span across multiple pages. Try to keep it to between 2-3 pages (obviously, this may vary depending on your market). Then, make sure those pages are to the point and include everything the hiring manager or recruiter needs to know to see that you are fit for this role. Include a short introductory paragraph at the beginning, followed by your experience, education, skills and qualifications to date. It goes without saying, but always remember to include up to date contact information and mention that your references are available ‘’on request’’ if you are not providing them at this time.
- Don’t forget the Soft Skills
With the majority of companies working remotely, there is an increased emphasis on soft skills more than ever before. Therefore, mentioning skills that are similar to Time Management, Social Intelligence & Communication, Digital Literacy, Collaboration & Agility and Negotiation is important here. These soft skills are ones which can be used remotely or online, so maybe it’s a certain software you’re trained in or a short course you have undertaken on effective communication, but now is the time to highlight this as a relevant achievement. Thinking outside the box will also make your CV stand out and leave a lasting impression on hiring managers which may be faced with reviewing numerous repetitive CVs on a daily basis.

Risk & Cyber
- Make your qualifications clear, for example - ACAMS, CISA, CISM OSCP, SABSA, AWS cert
- Demonstrate your regulatory understanding and exposure
- If you have facilitated training sessions, please include this on your CV.
- Don’t just list your GitHub account, include URLs to specific projects on GitHub as hiring managers are frequently looking for interesting projects which stand out.
- Showcase your technical skillset in the overview section and also when summarising your experience.
- Use action verbs to demonstrate your experience – ‘Applied’, ‘Improved’, ‘Implemented’, ‘Executed’, ‘Drove’.
- Demonstrate the size and scope of the projects that you have worked on.
- For Business Analysts particularly, your formatting and layout is integral. Hiring managers will judge the quality of your documentation by the presentation.
- It may be a very contract heavy market, but you still need to keep your CV concise - 8 pages at an absolute maximum.
