Elzana Ibragimova, recruitment consultant from our Progressive Recruitment Dubai team, talks us through some of the top innovations that have been made to support the efforts in tackling the virus.

New products 

Companies 

Ventilators 

  • Babcock (defence/engineering firm) 
  • Dyson (manufacturer) – Dyson is famed for creating vacuum cleaners and hairdryers, but it has answered the UK Government’s calls to manufacture thousands of ventilators for the NHS 
  • JFD (marine services) – have created a new type of ventilator system 
  • Various car manufacturers: Rolls RoyceMercedes Formula OneFordTesla, etc.
  • Aerogen makes the aerosol drug-delivery system that goes into ventilators in intensive care units (ICUs), and supplies companies such as Medtronic, Philips, MacKay and Hamilton Medical.

Face shields 

  • Aseptium & 4c engineering (both engineering companies in Scotland) joined forces to design a simple, effective face shield that could be rapidly manufactured on a large scale.  
  • ExxonMobil is applying its strong knowledge and experience with polymer-based technologies to expedite third-party production of innovative safety equipment that can be sterilized and worn multiple times. The design improves the coverage of a health care worker’s nose and mouth and will use a replaceable cartridge system that includes a filtration fabric to prevent contact spread of the virus from the saturated filter.

 

In addition, other companies ranging from luxury fashion brands to food chains are also changing their business focus to manufacture equipment and goods that can help combat the virus.

Hand sanitisers

  • Nike (sportswear) 
  • LVMH (luxury perfume/clothing brand – parent company of Christian Dior, Guerlain, Givenchy, etc.) – France – perfume production lines have changed to create hand sanitisers 
  • Ineos (chemicals company) – built/building 3 new plants in the UK, France, and Germany to produce free hand sanitiser 

Hospital scrubs / medical overalls / surgical (fabric) masks 

  • Zara (fashion/clothing)
  • GAP Inc. (fashion/clothing)
  • Prada (luxury fashion)
  • Under Armour (sportswear) have pledged to create “no-sew” fabric facemasks for medical staff 
  • O’Neill’s (sportswear) will be repurposing factory to make medical scrubs and facemasks for medical workers 
  • Haute Hijab (Leading Hijab manufacturer) will be donating 250 hijabs to healthcare workers fighting COVID-19 so they have clean sanitised hijabs and one less thing to worry about.
